The Five of Diamonds

Calvin Coolidge
30th President of the United States, 1923-1929

Calvin Coolidge was a man of very few words - his nickname was `silent Cal'. He slicked back his hair with petroleum jelly and carried himself in a stiff formal manner when he wasn't riding the mechanical horse he kept in the White House.

He believed in limiting the powers of the presidency, and that government should leave business alone.

Coolidge became president after Harding died in office. His direct and honest character did much to restore dignity to the presidency after the scandal left in Harding's wake.
